The Winnipeg Goldeyes have added another piece to what already is an impressive outfield.
On Monday, the American Association baseball club announced the signing of former major league outfielder Willy Garcia.
Garcia, 26, last played in 2017 for the Chicago White Sox, appearing in 44 games. During his stint with the Sox, the native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic hit .238 with two home runs and 12 RBIs.
Garcia, who’s heading into his ninth season of professional ball, was originally signed as an international free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009. He’s a career .258 hitter in 795 games played, while averaging 77 runs scored, 30 doubles, seven triples, 18 home runs, 82 RBIs, 12 stolen bases and 25 outfield assists per 162 games. Perhaps better known for his arm, Baseball America rated Garcia’s arm as the best in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization in 2012 and 2013.
Garcia rounds out an outfield that already features another former major leaguer, 38-year-old Reggie Abercrombie, and the AA’s 2017 player of the year, Josh Romanski.
The Fish now have 19 players under contract for the upcoming season, which kicks off on the road on May 16 against the Texas AirHogs.
