Bail granted to man charged in wife’s death

An accused killer has been granted bail while he awaits a first-degree murder trial in the death of his wife.

Juhyun Park, 44, will be under electronic monitoring when he’s released from custody, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Jeffrey Harris decided Monday after a lengthy bail hearing took place over the course of two days last week. The details of the hearing, including Crown prosecutors’ theory of the case, are covered by a publication ban.

Park has to pay for and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet in addition to putting up $45,000 cash. He is not allowed to leave Winnipeg or come within half a kilometre of the Winnipeg airport. He’s been ordered to turn over his South Korean passport and he is not allowed to request travel documents from the Korean Consulate or other officials, Harris decided.

He is also under a curfew and must remain in his apartment from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

His wife, 41-year-old Eunjee Kim, was found unconscious inside the suite on Jan. 9 and she later died.

Park was initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was later upgraded to murder.

The Crown argued against his release.
