The Canadian Premier League’s Valour FC announced the signing of forward Marco Bustos to a multi-year contract Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Bustos, one of Winnipeg’s most prominent homegrown soccer stars, will join the Valour from Oklahoma City Energy of the United Soccer League, where he had been since 2018. His addition brings Valour’s roster to 22 players.
The club is travelling to Calgary for a match against the Calvary FC tonight.
“I am delighted to bring a player of Marco’s calibre into Valour Football Club,” Valour FC GM and head coach Rob Gale said in a release. “Along with our two Dylans (Carreiro and Sacramento), I have very fond memories coaching Marco from a young age. He has blossomed into a dynamic attacking player whose goal-scoring creativity will excite the Valour Army.”
Bustos played for FC Northwest in Winnipeg for four seasons before joining the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy in 2011, where he remained until 2014. In his final year in Vancouver, he was part of the Whitecaps’ U-23 PDL side, scoring seven goals in four appearances.
In 2015, he officially signed with the Whitecaps and made his MLS debut on Oct. 14. Bustos made 57 appearances for the club, and in 2018 was loaned to Club Atletico Zacatepec (Ascenso Mexico). Later that year, he joined the OKC Energy.
He has scored once in 16 appearances with OKC. Bustos has also made six appearances with Canada’s senior men’s squad since 2015.
