Seventeen-year-old Dorian (Dory) Sanderson has been identified by Winnipeg police as the city’s 19th homicide victim of 2019.

Dorian died after a group of people began fighting on the street on the 300 block of Alfred Avenue on Sunday, at about 9:20 p.m. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died of his injuries.

Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Tammy Skrabek said Tuesday no arrests had yet been made, and officers were still conducting interviews.

At the side of the boulevard on Alfred, just after noon Tuesday, five people were quietly sitting and remembering Dorian.

A vase of flowers was on the street, a poster on a tree bears Dorian’s name, and in a nearby metal fire pit, chopped firewood was burning.

Jodi Orvis, who said her daughters knew Sanderson, said the fire would burn for four days.

“We have to keep the fire going to help his spirit go up,” Orvis said.

“I’d say to the ones who did this: ‘This is real life. You took his spirit. This is somebody’s son, somebody’s brother. And this was cowardly. You didn’t need 10 boys to kill one,'” she said.

“That’s just a coward.”

Denise Desmarais, who lives in a home facing the homicide scene, is helping keep the fire going.

“My uncle has some logs out back that he cut last year and he just left it,” Desmarais said.

“It’s all dry, so it will burn. He is coming back and he’s going to chop it to firewood so they can use it. I know how it is — they have to keep the fire going to get him to a better place. I just want to help.”

Meanwhile, Skrabek said police have not yet released the name of a man killed in a Greencrest Avenue residence in Fort Richmond on May 24, because they are still locating next of kin. She said no arrests had yet been made in the case.
