Two goals in two minutes.

That was the difference in Halifax on Wednesday as the HFX Wanderers came back to win 2-1 over Valour FC in the first leg of their second-round Canadian Championship matchup.

Valour opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Dylan Sacramento found fellow Winnipegger Marco Bustos in the box. His shot deflected into the back of the net. It was Bustos’ first goal of the season.

Valour didn’t have the lead for long. Halifax forward Thomasz Skublak answered with a goal from a corner kick in the 39th minute. Two minutes later, Halifax struck again with Mohamed Kourouma drilling a shot past Valour keeper Mathias Janssens to give the home side a 2-1 lead heading into the half-time intermission.

Janssens came into the game with a 2-0 record on two clean sheets. Halifax had 16 shots on the day compared to Valour’s eight. Valour won the possession battle, controlling the ball 57.8 per cent of the time.

The second leg will be played June 12 at IG Field. Valour FC will need a 1-0 victory or a win by two or more goals to advance on aggregate. The winner will play Ottawa Fury FC of the United Soccer League in the third round. The third-round winner will square off against Toronto FC in the semifinal.
