McClennon, Savoie spark Ice to first pre-season win

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Veteran forward Connor McClennon had a goal and an assist, and No. 1 overall draft choice Matthew Savoie registered two assists in his first Western Hockey League pre-season game, as the Winnipeg Ice thumped the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-1 at Stride Place Saturday night.

Cole Muir, Logan Danis, Brad Ginnell and Owen Pederson also scored. The team will complete its exhibition schedule with a pair of games in Saskatoon Friday and Saturday against the Blades.

Jonny Hooker had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings, who were scoreless in six power-play opportunties. Winnipeg went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Will Gurski stopped made 22 saves in the Ice net while Brandon goaltender Connor Ungar made 22 stops.

Brandon beat Winnipeg 5-0 in the pre-season opener for both clubs at Westoba Place Friday night.

Winnipeg opens the regular season Sept. 20 on the road in Brandon before returning home to host the Wheat Kings Sept. 21 at the University of Manitoba’s recently refurbished Wayne Fleming Arena.
