Conservative Dancho unseats one-term Liberal Mihychuk

Conservative rookie Raquel Dancho knocked off first-term Liberal MaryAnn Mihychuk in Kildonan-St. Paul.

Dancho, who served as special assistant to the province’s sport, culture and heritage minister, had collected nearly 45 per cent of the vote by 11 p.m. with 185 of the riding’s 205 polls reporting.

“I’m so honoured that the people of Kildonan-St. Paul put their trust in me, and we worked hard, and we earned it,” Dancho told her cheering supporters.

“That’s the thing, you do the work and hard work works.”

Shortly after, Dancho told reporters: “I just want to continue the hard work that I’ve been doing.”

“I owe it to the voters, they put their trust and their faith in me and I told them that I would represent them with integrity, hard-work ethic and with responsibility, and that I would fight hard to make life more affordable for Canadians.”

Mihychuk’s campaign office was considerably more subdued.

“Like you, I am disappointed with the results,” Mihychuk told a few dozen supporters at her headquarters. “But we should hold our heads high.”

Mihychuk, whose political career included an earlier stint as a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, an unsuccessful run at the Winnipeg mayoralty and a cabinet post in the provincial NDP government of Gary Doer being a cabinet minister in the NDP government of Gary Doer, said she’s run her last race as a candidate.

“I’m not going to run again,” she said. “I’ll be working in the back helping other women candidates win.”
