Dylan Carreiro never imagined he’d one day captain a professional soccer club in his hometown, but that became a reality for the Winnipegger Monday.

Valour FC announced midfielders Carreiro and Daryl Fordyce, a 33-year-old from Belfast, Northern Ireland, have been named co-captains for the 2020 season. The eight Canadian Premier League teams are currently training, but there still has been no formal announcement made on when the season will start and how.

“It’s obviously something special, especially because I’m a hometown boy playing for my hometown club,” Carreiro told the Free Press. “To be able to represent and be a leader of the club, that means a lot to me and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

Carreiro, a 25-year-old who grew up on Ashburn St., has stated many times how important it is for players like himself to now have a professional team in Winnipeg. Now with a Winnipeg native as captain, it shows the next generation that they can make a name for themselves in their own backyard.

“I’ve always had to try to look for opportunities elsewhere and not in my hometown obviously. But with this opportunity that we were able to get last year and now moving forward, for the youngsters growing up, it’s an opportunity where you can stay at home and represent the city you grew up in. To be honest, no, it’s not something that I would have ever thought would happen but I’m very grateful that I’m able to have this opportunity,” said Carreiro.

Carreiro believes Fordyce is an ideal partner to share the role with.

“He’s a great guy… Loves to talk about football and loves to talk to the young kids to get them to understand what’s going on in the situations they put themselves in on and off the field,” said Carreiro.
