The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were busy on Thursday as they locked up a trio of players for the 2021 season.
Canadian special teams ace Mike Miller and a pair of American defensive backs, Mercy Maston and Nick Taylor, agreed to one-year contracts.
Miller, a fullback from New Brunswick, had a sensational 2019 season where his 25 special-teams tackles were tied for second most in the league. His strong play didn’t go unnoticed as he was selected to both the West Division and CFL Players’ Association all-star teams and was voted the West Division’s most outstanding special teams player. He was also named the Bombers’ most outstanding Canadian and most outstanding special teams player.
Miller will have a chance to make history with the Bombers in the 2021 season as his 185 career special-teams tackles are only five behind the CFL’s all-time record of 190, which is held by former B.C. Lion Jason Arakgi. Miller signed with the Blue and Gold in 2017 after playing the first six years of his CFL career in Edmonton. Miller hasn’t missed a game since joining the Bombers.
Maston and Taylor help solidify the secondary as the duo impressed in the team’s run to the 2019 Grey Cup. Following the CFL cancelling the 2020 season, Maston asked for his release to pursue NFL opportunities. Maston, who lined up at defensive halfback and the ‘dime’ position after signing with the Bombers on Aug. 4, 2019, didn’t land a contract down south. Maston played three regular-season games and three playoff games with the Bombers, totalling 13 tackles, one interception and a sack.
Taylor also joined the Bombers late in 2019 after starting the season with Edmonton. He played in four regular-season games and all three playoff games. In post-season play, he had seven tackles, one interception and two pass knockdowns.
The Bombers’ list of pending free agents is now down to 23 names. Players who don’t re-sign by Feb. 9 will hit free agency.
