The family of a 22-year-old man who has been missing for 40 days has issued a tearful plea for help from the public.

Rico Cody Roger Linklater was last seen on Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in northern Manitoba in the early hours of Oct. 21, and was reported missing the following day.

“Our son Rico has been missing for over a month,” Sylvia Wood said at a news conference as she was overcome with emotion.

“We are in total shock and disbelief. We’ve always loved our son and we know him as very humble,” Roger Linklater said. “Our son’s life is the most important thing in the world right now… we need answers. Our hearts are hurting.”

The family flew to Winnipeg from Nisichawayasihk, also known as Nelson House, Wednesday afternoon to ask for support and information that could help them find their son.

It’s believed Rico may have travelled to Thompson or could still be in the community. He is 6-feet tall, 160 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing grey pants, a black sweater, brown Nike shoes and a grey baseball cap.

On Wednesday, his family called for better communication from the RCMP.

“We are frustrated,” Wood said, adding that the family has shared many tips regarding their son’s disappearance with the RCMP but has heard nothing in return.

Hilda Anderson-Pyrz of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak called for timely and consistent updates from the RCMP in all missing person cases.

“Communication is critical. Time is critical,” she said. “This is very difficult. The family is hanging on to hope to bring their loved one home safely.

“I encourage the RCMP to connect immediately with Rico’s family to ensure there is followup on any tips that are being provided,” she added.

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee told the news conference additional search-and-rescue resources are required in northern Manitoba, a vast expanse of land with a harsh climate.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nelson House RCMP at 204-484-2837, or call Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
