Healthcare workers were forced to call police after a patient became violent while receiving care at the Grace Hospital Saturday morning.

Around 7:04 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to reports of a disturbance at the hospital. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male who was damaging property and appeared to be suffering from psychosis, Const. Jay Murray said in an email.

Officers took a suspect into custody and then left him in the care of hospital staff.

Police have not pressed any charges and an investigation is ongoing, Murray said.

Both police and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority confirmed no injures were reported from the incident.

“We want to recognize and commend our staff, physicians, and security for their quick action in containing this sudden and alarming situation, and for protecting each other and their other patients,” Scott Sime, WRHA regional communications director, said in an email Saturday.

A patient room and bathroom were damaged during the outburst. The extent of the damage is still being assessed and repaired by facility management.

“We expect the damaged areas will be cleaned and fully operational again shortly,” Sime said.
