Volunteers made all the difference when Emma Bullock attended St. Malo Summer Camps as a child.

“Something that really attracted me to the camp was the counsellors and just the love they had for the campers,” says Bullock, 21. “They made everybody feel welcomed.”

Bullock started volunteering at the camp as a counsellor-in-training when she was 15, eventually working her way up to a senior counsellor role.

Ad van Dijk is the co-director at Luther Village.

She’s still involved with the camp today.

“I really enjoy getting to know people,” she says. “Because we have kids coming in from all sorts of situations, I like making them feel loved and providing a fun space — a space for growth in numerous areas.”

Summer is still four months away, but camps across the province are already recruiting volunteers.

Whether you’re a teenager looking to be a counsellor, or an adult who has some spare time to do maintenance work or assist in the kitchen, there’s somewhere for you to help, says Kim Scherger, executive director of the Manitoba Camping Association.

“If people are looking for something to do — if they even have just a week in the summer — go to our website and look for our list of camps, and look for a place where you might want to work,” Scherger says. “It’s life-giving in so many ways.”

That’s been true for Ad and Lisa van Dijk. Prior to becoming co-directors at Luther Village in northwestern Ontario, the van Dijks were longtime volunteers at the camp.

Lisa has been involved at Luther Village since she was a child. Ad first got involved 26 years ago, helping with groundskeeping and maintenance work weekends each spring to get the camp ready for summer.

Maintaining hiking trails, repairing docks, building new cabins — there’s not much Ad hasn’t had a hand in at the camp.

“To be able to help the camp, knowing that it is going to be used by a lot of children and a lot of families, is just a feel-good thing,” he says. “Being able to keep camp operating with the limited means it has is always a good feeling and I’m always happy when (the work is) done.”

The van Dijks raised their 26-year-old twin sons, Cody and Byron, at Luther Village. Today, the twins are avid volunteers at the camp.

“It has become a real family affair,” Ad says. “Luther Village has been a huge part of not only our lives but our boys’ lives. It’s a place we call home.”

Anyone interested in volunteering at a camp can visit mbcamping.ca for details.

One of the ways the association promotes camps is through its Sunshine Fund, which subsidizes the cost of summer camps for children and their families. Applications are available now.

The association is expecting to offer subsidies to 600 children this year.

People interested in contributing to the Sunshine Fund can make a donation on the association’s website, by calling 204-784-1130, or by sending a cheque to Unit F – 1215 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg, MB, R2G 1L8.

Van Dijk hopes people get involved with summer camps.

“It’s an experience you’ll never forget,” he says.
