Beep-beep, beep-beep, yeah. For Lori Robinson, volunteering is as easy as hopping in her Volkswagen Golf and hitting the road.

Robinson volunteers with Meals on Wheels, which provides home delivery of nutritious meals to anyone who cannot prepare a meal for themselves. The 58-year-old got involved with the non-profit organization two years ago.

“I basically just picked up the phone and called to see if they needed volunteers and my timing couldn’t have been better,” she recalls. “It turned out they needed someone to deliver in the River Heights area, which is where I live.”

Robinson drives to Misericordia Health Centre every Wednesday to gather meals before heading out on her lunchtime delivery route. It’s one of 13 Meals on Wheels pickup spots in the city.

An avid music lover, Robinson uses the two hours in her car to listen to the ’80s hits and ’90s alternative music that she grew up on, as well as current favourites, such as acclaimed Texas rock band Spoon.

She picks up additional shifts whenever she can.

“I’m retired and have the time now, and I feel it’s important to give back,” she says. “It also makes me feel good to do good, and it gives me a sense of purpose.”

Robinson has built a rapport with many of the clients, which she says makes volunteering all the more enjoyable.

She and one of the clients bond over their shared love of the Winnipeg Jets.

Another client, whom Robinson describes as “the sweetest elderly woman I’ve encountered so far,” gave her a Christmas present: a porcelain ornament depicting a shoe.

Unbeknownst to the client, Robinson loves shoes and the ornament happened to perfectly match some of the decor in her home.

“It was something that was quite appropriate for me without her even realizing it,” Robinson says. “It was incredibly heartwarming.”

Robinson attributes her desire to serve with Meals on Wheels to her upbringing in Roblin, 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

“I think growing up in a small town where the sense of community is strong and the people are always there for one another, whenever help is needed, is the reason for my interest (in volunteering),” she says. “It kind of takes me back to that time in my life.”

Robinson is one of approximately 300 volunteers who work to deliver meals 365 days a year.

For many clients, the volunteer visit is their only contact with another individual during the day. So, in addition to providing nutritious food, the daily visit from volunteers can ease feelings of loneliness.

Meals on Wheels is currently looking for more delivery drivers. Drivers enjoy a flexible schedule, can deliver to the neighbourhood of their choice and receive an honorarium for gas.

For more information and to apply, visit mealswinnipeg.com/volunteer.

Robinson encourages people to get involved. The staff at Meals on Wheels are a pleasure to work with and interacting with the people on her route is enjoyable, she says.

“Although it’s only a very short time that I get to engage with the clients, it seems to make them happy when I arrive with their meal. They’re always very appreciative and thankful for the service.”

If you know a special volunteer, please contact aaron.epp@gmail.com.
