The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is investigating after a patient died in the St. Boniface Hospital’s emergency department Friday.

The patient had been waiting approximately five hours, was triaged, and had received various diagnostic tests, the WRHA confirmed in a statement Saturday.

The death will be reviewed by the WRHA to determine if it meets the criteria of a critical incident.

A patient has died after waiting five hours in St. Boniface Hosptial’s emergency department. They were triaged and had received various diagnostic tests.

A critical incident is defined in provincial legislation as “an unintended event that occurs when health services are provided to an individual and results in a consequence to him or her that is serious and undesired.”

Earlier this month, the death of a patient in the Grace Hospital emergency department was ruled a critical incident.

That patient, who died Nov. 18, had been in the ER for 33 hours and had been triaged, assessed and was receiving care while awaiting transfer to an in-patient bed, the WRHA said.

The government’s latest report on critical incidents was released Jan. 12 and covered deaths and other serious incidents between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022.
