The MJHL’s Niverville Nighthawks have firmed up their management and coaching staff for the 2024-25 season.
On Wednesday, the club announced the promotion of Mike McAulay to the position of general manager and Dwight Hirst to head coach.
Both men fufilled their respective roles on an interim basis for the final 14 games of the 2023-24 regular season following the firing of GM and head coach Kelvin Cech on Feb. 12.
McAulay said the recruiting process for next season is well underway.
“We had some players that were selected in the USHL draft and there’s always a little bit of a threat of (losing players to) the BCHL but I think we’ve got a pretty good nucleus of players that are committed to coming back,” said McAulay, who signed a two-year contract. “You always remind yourself that you’ll deal with who’s there in September and do your very best in the off-season to recruit players you think are going to be really good fits for your organization, both on and off the ice.”
McAulay had served as the team’s assistant GM and director of scouting since the franchise’s inception prior to the 2022-23 season. Prior to that, he filled a similar role with the Winkler Flyers.
During his time in the MJHL, he’s also been employed as the assistant vice-president of business development for Canadian Western Bank, which is based in Winnipeg. McAulay will continue to work at CWB.
“There are a few changes here at the bank,” said McAulay, 47. “I’m going to be move to a four-day work week, so that’ll give me a little bit more flexibility and sort of time to spend in Niverville during the season.”
Hirst, meanwhile, joined the NightHawks after four seasons as head coach of the Eastman U18 AAA Selects. He guided Niverville to a 7-6-0-1 regular-season record. The team went 30-24-3-1 overall.
The Nighthawks were then swept in their best-of-seven quarterfinal playoff series by the Steinbach Pistons.
The club also announced the return of assistant coach Tyler Anderson, who had served in that role since the team’s inception.
“It’s time now to get over that hump and really look to win a playoff round and continue to move players along in their development,” said McAulay.
