The Winnipeg Police Board wants to know what qualities residents would like to see in the next police chief.
The board plans to consult the public and key stakeholders this month to help determine the skill-set it should seek in the person selected to replace outgoing Winnipeg Police Service Chief Danny Smyth, who will soon retire.
Colleen Mayer, vice-chair of the police board, said a new chief could be in place by the end of summer or early fall.
Smyth said his official last day will be Sept. 7.
On June 18, an open house (from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) at True North Square will aim to gather feedback from the Indigenous community, while an event with the same hours on June 20 at the South Sudanese Community Centre seeks input from the “equity deserving community,” including First Nations people, women, those with a disability, LGBTTQ+ people, newcomers and racialized/people of colour.
The board will accept written submissions until June 28, which can be emailed to wpb@winnipeg.ca or entered through an online form on the Winnipeg Police Board website at winnipegpoliceboard.ca
