Chris Streveler’s CFL season has come to an abrupt end owing to a serious knee injury.

Three of the four major ligaments in Streveler’s left knee were torn during Saturday’s Banjo Bowl, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback wrote on Instagram from his personal account Tuesday afternoon.

“This weekend was the first time in my life I’ve ever went down on a football field and stayed down,” Streveler said. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the last couple days, especially my teammates who have shared the battlefield with me over the years. All your support means more than you could imagine.”

Blue Bombers QB Chris Streveler suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Banjo Bowl.

“Although this will be a long road to recovery, this isn’t the end of my journey,” he added. “I will attack this rehab with the same relentless work ethic and positive attitude that I bring, day in and day out. See ya’ll back out on the field soon.”

The 29-year-old suffered the injury late in the third quarter following a low tackle from Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Miles Brown, who wrapped his arms around Streveler’s legs as he was delivering a pass, drawing a 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer.

Brown is the same player who was fined for a head shot that knocked QB Zach Collaros out of the second half of the Labour Day Classic a week earlier and prompted Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller to call out CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie and the league’s offficials for not doing enough to protect quarterbacks.

With two healthy quarterbacks on the roster, the Bombers search for a third pivot is already underway. Options include Jake Dolegala or Bryan Scott, both of whom were released earlier this season, from the B.C. Lions and Toronto Argonauts, respectively.

Sources tell the Free Press the club is interested in Dolegala and talks of a potential contract have already started. The 27-year-old Dolegala has dressed for 24 CFL games over the last three seasons and has a 2-8 record as a starter, including nine starts with the Roughriders in 2022 and one this season with the Lions. Dolegala’s victories came against the Bombers and Lions, both while a member of the Riders in 2022.
