Car crashes into Osborne Village store, speeds away

An Osborne Village business is reeling after a car spun out and crashed into its storefront early Friday morning.

Arden Coy, co-owner of Rooster boutique on Osborne Street, came to work around 7 a.m. to find out a car had crashed into the front of her shop and hit a Hydro pole nearby.

Security footage shows a grey vehicle spinning out on the road before crashing into the facade of the store. The video shows the car speeding off shortly after.

“It does look like they were speeding pretty heavily down Osborne,” Coy said Friday. “And then did a complete 180 and then crashed.”

Coy says emergency crews arrived shortly after the crash but she wasn’t made aware until she showed up to begin her work day.

Coy co-owns the shop with her mom, along with neighbouring businesses Small Mercies and Silver Lotus, the latter of which has been at 103 Osborne St. for 40 years.

This is the second blow to one of their businesses in as many years. In June 2023, Small Mercies, which features a boutique and coffee shop, shut down for more than a year after a fire.

“It just also sucks because, like, we’re such strong advocates for the area, and it just happens to be that it’s always our store,” Coy said.

On Friday, she kept the store shuttered to clean up while Winnipeg police investigated the crash. She expects the shop to reopen Saturday.

Despite the recent slippery conditions across much of Winnipeg, Coy suspects the crash was more than just a case of a sleek roadway.

“This person in the video, it looks like they’re going really fast. To brake and then completely do a 180 in your car, you have to be going quite a fast pace there.”
