City police have charged a man in semi-truck collision last summer that left a Winnipeg couple with serious injuries.

The charges come more than eight months after a tractor-trailer slammed into the back of the couple’s SUV at the intersection of Lagimodiere Boulevard and East Mint Place, pinning them between that truck and a second semi.

The Winnipeg Police Service provided an update on the investigation via a news release Thursday. Investigators from its traffic division have charged Harparkash Teje, 29, of Winnipeg, with two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

He was taken into custody, police said.

Carli Paetzold, a labour and delivery nurse, was in critical condition when she was airlifted to a city hospital by STARS air ambulance after the July 5 crash. She suffered multiple broken bones and severe back injuries.

Marcus Paetzold, a paramedic, was transported to hospital by ground ambulance. He suffered a serious concussion, bruises and cuts, and was released the following day to continue his recovery at home, the Free Press previously reported.

The couple’s pet dog, Oakley, also survived the crash.

In its latest update, WPS said both victims “suffered life-altering injuries as a result of the collision.”

An online fundraiser launched in the wake of the collision raised more than $24,000 within days of the crash. It said the funds would be used to help the couple, who are in their mid-20s, with expenses and needs as they arise.

In an update published online July 19, fundraiser organizer Emily Guenther said her cousin, Carli, required facial bone surgery after the collision.

“She continues to work on her mobility with physiotherapy using a back brace and walker,” Guenther wrote. “Please pray for reduced pain as her body heals as there are many ups and downs.”

Marcus, Guenther said, was recovering at home and being monitored for potential stroke symptoms.

“We are so thankful he can come spend time with Carli at the hospital everyday,” she said at the time.
