Although Canada Day is months away, Premier Wab Kinew hopes Manitobans will celebrate national pride with all the vigour of the annual holiday during a rally at the provincial legislature on Sunday.

“Tomorrow is a big day, it’s our rally for Canada,” Kinew said in a video posted to social media on Saturday, reminding people about the celebratory event set to take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s all about celebrating the true north strong and free, and this country that we love so much.”

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is encouraging Manitobans to rally for Canada at the legislature Sunday afternoon.

The family-friendly event will include food trucks, performers, face painting, street hockey and other activities for children. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, carry flags and put their Canadian pride on full display.

Kinew announced the event last week, saying he was inspired to host the free “rah rah” event after hearing the concerns of Manitoba school children.

“Right now, kids in classrooms that I’m visiting — above a certain age, maybe 8 or 9 years old — every single one of them asks if we’re going to become the 51st state,” he said last week.

“I want to send a message to young people and to our kids in particular, that this is a great country … And in spite of what you might see on TV or social media, there’s a lot of security in Canada, and we want to boost that and send a positive message to our kids.”
