Shelly’s Indigenous Bistro was forced to close Monday after a suspicious fire at its office space on Logan Avenue.
Vincent Bignell, a manager for the locally owned restaurant on Main Street, said she received a phone call at about 3 a.m. Sunday saying the shop’s office space at 1032 Logan Ave. was ablaze.
“We went there and the whole back shipping area was lit on fire,” Bignell said Monday.
A fire broke out at an office building belonging to Shelly’s Indigenous Bistro early Monday morning, forcing the restaurant to close for the day.
Bignell looked at the building’s security footage and described seeing an individual with rubber gloves riding into the area on a bicycle before dragging a mattress and other rubbish from a nearby bin to the building’s door and lighting it on fire.
“It definitely looked intentional,” she said.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire in an industrial building on Logan Avenue at 3:35 a.m.
At the scene, crews found fire and smoky conditions, the WFPS said in a news release. The fire was under control by 4:37 a.m.
No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.
The restaurant remained closed on Monday.
“We’re just trying to focus on our team right now and making sure everybody’s OK,” Bignell said.
The restaurant uses the office to do administrative work and sends its mail there.
Bignell expects the restaurant to reopen Tuesday.
