The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says no charges will be laid in two unrelated incidents where men were shot by RCMP officers.

In one incident, an officer shot a 39-year-old man who allegedly carjacked a stopped vehicle on Highway 6 on Oct. 24. Gypsumville RCMP were searching for a stolen vehicle linked to a series of crimes that had happened overnight in Thompson when they saw a suspect south of Pinaymootang First Nation, RCMP said at the time.

Mounties tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over before eventually getting out and stealing another vehicle while “holding what was believed to be a weapon,” the IIU said in a news release Monday.

RCMP said at the time that the man “exited the stolen vehicle with a firearm.” He drove the second vehicle for a short distance before it came to a stop in a ditch.

In the other incident, an officer shot a man in the leg after he allegedly assaulted a woman and burned several vehicles on a property near Sanford in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald on Sept. 4. The 23-year-old man, who was armed with “an edged weapon,” was taken to hospital in Winnipeg and later released to police, the IIU said.

The IIU has not released a final report on either incident because the men who were shot are still before the courts on charges related to their arrests.
