fA new pathway has created accessible recreation links behind Winakwa Community Centre.

New asphalt and granular paths link up an outdoor rink, outdoor classroom space, baseball diamond, community garden and tennis courts, while also boosting connections to the community centre, Windsor Park Collegiate and College Beliveau.

“Each of these spaces on their own are amazing and special but when they’re connected by these pathways they become even better. They bring people together, they build community,” said Crystal Poirier, president of Winakwa Community Centre.

The pathway project cost $220,000 — $175,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund, $15,000 from a Trails Manitoba grant and $30,000 from donations raised by the community centre.

“These improvements … (are) creating a place for residents of all ages to stay connected, to stay active and enjoy the outdoors,” said Ginette Lavack, the federal MP for St. Boniface-St. Vital.

The development marks the first phase of a broader project, which aims to add a gathering space with a central fire pit, a large picnic shelter and a teaching garden, Poirier said.

The community centre does not have an exact timeline for the remaining elements of the project, as it is still seeking funding to complete them, she said.

Once all construction is completed, the pathways will complete a looped trail connecting all of the surrounding properties and amenities.
