A Long Plain First Nation man charged in a recent slaying in the Weston neighbourhood was arrested and released for allegedly impersonating a Mountie during an attempted home invasion this summer.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service members arrested Christian Meeches, 27, in connection with the slaying shortly before 3:45 a.m. on Christmas Day. He was turned over to the Winnipeg Police Service’s homicide unit, the WPS said in a news release Monday.

An RCMP spokeswoman confirmed Monday that Meeches was arrested and charged with break-and-enter, mischief and impersonating a peace officer after an incident at a Portage la Prairie home on Aug. 8. He was later released.

Manitoba RCMP asked for the public’s help in finding Meeches after two men told residents they were RCMP officers while trying to get into a home.

Mounties were sent to the residence on Royal Road shortly after 6:15 p.m. and were told two men who claimed to be RCMP officers had asked the residents to open the door. They tried to push their way inside, breaking a door and a porch window before fleeing in a white sedan.

RCMP released a photo of Meeches on Aug. 26, saying he was one of the men involved and that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
