Two sought after attempted home invasion

12:16 PM

RCMP are searching for two men who told residents they were RCMP officers while trying to get into a Portage la Prairie home earlier this month.

Police were sent to the Royal Road home at about 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 8 and were told two men who claimed to be Mounties had asked them to open the door. They tried to push their way inside, breaking a door and a porch window before fleeing in a white sedan.

RCMP said in a news release Tuesday that one of the suspects is Christian Meeches, 27, of Long Plain First Nation. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Police are trying to identify another man who was wearing a white hoodie during the incident. Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Mom pleads for tips in son’s slaying

10:41 AM

The mother of a man slain in Lake Manitoba First Nation two years ago is again pleading for tips in solving the homicide.

Lyndon McIvor, 25, went missing after a night out with friends on Aug. 26, 2023. HIs body was found in a wooded area on Aug. 31.

“It’s hard. It happened in our community. Everyone knows each other, and when something happens, it affects all of us,” the victim’s mother, Cheryl Maytwayashing, said in an RCMP news release Tuesday.

“If it’s your child, your grandchild, niece, nephew, ask them to talk because it’s affecting a lot of people. We don’t want this to happen to another family. People do know what happened.”

Barry Leslie Swan was arrested on Sept. 2, 2023, for McIvor’s killing, and later charged with second-degree murder. Court records show the charge against Swan, who was 36 at the time of his arrest, was stayed in Ashern provincial court on Sept. 11, 2024.

RCMP, who released a video of Maytwayashing speaking about her son and the case, asked anyone with information about the killing to call the major crime services tips line at 431-489-8110.

An Ontario man is charged with 20 offences after a gas station at Deacon’s Corner was robbed at gunpoint early Friday.

Oakbank RCMP were sent to the location east of Winnipeg at 4:30 a.m. after a man went into the station, displayed a gun and demanded the employee unlock a fuel pump. He left in a yellow pickup truck.
