A Winnipeg firefighter was injured while battling a blaze in a vacant bungalow on Nairn Avenue early Friday.

Fire crews were called to the house in the 300 block of Nairn just before 1:30 a.m., when they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

Firefighters first battled the flames from the outside before attacking it from the inside. However, crews had to retreat because the blaze became too dangerous, the release said.

The fire was deemed under control by about 4:45 a.m.

One firefighter was hurt and assessed by paramedics at the scene. The firefighter didn’t need to go the hospital, the release said.

WFPS is planning an emergency demolition of the gutted bungalow.

Roads in the area remained closed Friday morning.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use caution when the area reopens, as water may freeze and create slippery conditions. City crews are expected to apply sand and salt to roads and sidewalks as needed.

Firefighters were also called to a blaze in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Magnus Avenue just before 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Crews got the fire under control about half an hour later.

The home’s residents evacuated on their own. City social workers are helping them find temporary lodging.
