Winnipeg’s newest Costco store is under construction.

An excavator and trucks filled part of 4077 Portage Ave. — currently a field — Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Winnipeg issued Costco Wholesale Corp. a development permit in July to build a 166,894-square-foot store. Work began a few days ago, one local resident noted.

Costco didn’t respond to questions by print deadline. The American-based chain doesn’t comment on new locations more than three months ahead of opening, according to the company’s media request form.

The new Portage Avenue site, located near Assiniboia Downs, isn’t planned to open in the next three months. Costco has scheduled 13 stores to open between August and November in Japan, Mexico, United States and Spain.

Winnipeg is home to three of its own: on St. James Street, Regent Avenue West and McGillivray Boulevard.

The latest, to be part of a growing Westport mixed-use development, will consume approximately 15.4 acres. City councillors approved a one-storey building and parking lot last year.

Renderings from June 2023 indicate Costco will also build a gas bar at the location.

The corporation’s arrival on Winnipeg’s western edge has Sherisse Demkiw-Smith excited. She currently doesn’t have a membership but is ready to sign up once more.

“I think it’s going to be great,” said the long-time area resident. “I think people are going to be extremely happy.”

Demkiw-Smith recalled trekking to the St. James Street Costco and shopping amid masses of customers. She, like many others, gravitates to Costco’s bulk offerings.

Earlier this summer, the City of Winnipeg installed a traffic light near the St. James Street hub in response to vehicle congestion.

The city doesn’t have a construction timeline for the Portage Avenue Costco. Those details must be provided by the owners, said spokesman Kalen Qually.

Last year, Mayor Scott Gillingham praised the new Costco’s arrival, calling it “great for our local economy.”

Costco is a big-box retailer with locations in eight countries. Its total revenue within 36 weeks of its fiscal 2024 exceeded US$174.7 billion.
