The NDP government has named a former cabinet minister as chair of the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation board of directors.
On Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn appointed John Plohman to oversee the Crown corporation, which is responsible for providing financial services and risk management programs to the province’s agriculture sector.
Plohman was the MLA for Dauphin from November 1981 to April 1995 and held several cabinet posts, including minister of government services. He is also a retired teacher and former municipal councillor who currently lives in East St. Paul.
“Agriculture in Manitoba is growing and I am confident that the experience, knowledge and abilities of the individuals appointed to this newly formed board will play an important role in supporting agricultural stakeholders across our province,” Kostyshyn said in a release.
Don Kostesky, a retired farmer from Brandon, was appointed vice-chair. Kostesky was formerly CEO and general manager of Farmers Co-op Seed Plant and Keystone Seedcoaters.
New directors include Interlake Forage Seeds president Paul Gregory (Fisher Branch), former UFCW 832 representative Mary Johnson (Beausejour), Grandview-area farmer Larry Bohdanovich, Manitoba Métis Federation agriculture specialist Rayna Gleich and Gurjaspal Singh Bala (St. Adolphe), a technical program manager with Harmonic Technologies.
Continuing directors include Brian Brown and Kristy-Layne Carr.
Under the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation Act, the corporation also administers emergency assistance programs and provides inspection and verification services to the agriculture industry.
