TORONTO — The 19-year-old Toronto man who stabbed Stefanie Rengel six times and left her dying in the snow has been sentenced to life with no chance at parole for at least 10 years.
Justice Ian Nordheimer, who handed out the adult sentence, had the option of sentencing David Bagshaw — publicly identified on Monday — as a youth, but opted for the harshest penalty available.
He said that while Bagshaw had expressed remorse for the killing and showed signs of rehabilitating, those factors cannot “blind us to the fact that David still poses a threat….”

“The horrific nature of the circumstances surrounding the death of Stefanie Rengel should be evident to any rational person,” Nordheimer said.
He said only an adult sentence, with its continued supervision, would ensure Bagshaw gets all the necessary counselling and treatment he needs.
Bagshaw pleaded guilty to first-degree murder earlier this year. His girlfriend, 17-year-old Melissa Todorovic, was found guilty of first-degree murder for ordering him to kill Rengel, a girl who she had never met. She was erroneously convinced Rengel was a rival for Bagshaw’s affections and was relentless in her threats to leave him, or have sex with someone else, if he did not kill the 14-year-old.
Todorovic got life with no chance at parole for seven years.
