Two Canadian tourists were killed and another wounded in a shooting at a Mexican resort in the state of Quintana Roo on Friday.
The shootings occurred at the Xcaret Hotel south of Playa del Carmen, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Lucio Hernandez Gutierrez, secretary of public security for the state of Quintana Roo, said in a Twitter statement that three individuals were immediately transferred to hospital. He said all three guests were Canadian. Two of the tourists died there.
The official also posted three photos of an individual alleged to be the gunman.
In a statement, Global Affairs Canada said it was aware of reports that Canadian citizens were involved in an incident in Mexico.
“Consular officials are contacting local authorities to gather more information and stand ready to provide consular assistance,” the agency said.
Luis Horacio Najera, a former Mexican journalist in the GTA who was monitoring the incident, told the Star five shots were reported to have been fired at a restaurant on the resort at 2:36 p.m. local time. Other people attending the restaurant ran for cover and the gunman is said to have fled into the nearby jungle.
According to reports, two Canadian males and one female were involved and the incident stemmed from an argument between guests of the hotel.
Najera said the state attorney general said one of the males killed had an extensive criminal record related to gun and drugs charges.
Social media users were commenting on a Facebook group called Hotel Xcaret Mexico that they were told by resort staff to stay in their rooms and were having trouble getting any more information about the incident.
It is just the latest brazen act of violence along Mexico’s famed Mayan Riviera, the crown jewel of its tourism industry.
In November, a shootout on the beach of Puerto Morelos left two suspected drug dealers dead. Authorities said there were some 15 gunmen from a gang that apparently disputed control of drug sales there.
In late October, farther south in the laid-back destination of Tulum, two tourists — one a California travel blogger born in India and the other German — were caught in the apparent crossfire of rival drug dealers and killed.
Following those events, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent nearly 1,500 members of the National Guard to reinforce security in the area.
