MONTREAL – The Conservatives won’t be fielding a full slate of candidates in the federal election now that Elections Canada has rejected the party’s candidate for a Quebec City riding.

Chanie Thériault had been chosen by the party to contest the riding of Québec Centre, which has been held by former Liberal cabinet minister Jean-Yves Duclos since 2015.

Elections Canada did not say why it rejected the candidate but the Conservatives said it was an issue with the documents Thériault submitted.

The federal agency confirmed the party would not be able to put forward another candidate because the nomination period has been closed since Monday afternoon.

Poll aggregator 338Canada describes the riding as a Liberal safe seat and shows Duclos with a considerable lead over his rivals. The Conservatives finished third in the riding in 2021.

There is also no Green party candidate listed on the ballot, leaving just the Liberal, Bloc Québécois, People’s Party of Canada and NDP candidates, along with an Independent, to contest the riding.
