AURORA – York Regional Police say they’ve charged a 37-year-old man with multiple offences after he was caught speeding down an Ontario highway at more than 200 kilometres an hour.

Police say officers were patrolling near Bloomington Road and Highway 404 in Aurora on July 4 when they saw a man on a black Yamaha motorcycle driving “recklessly” at high speeds on the highway.

They say a police helicopter followed the motorcycle to a gas station on Elgin Mills Road, where the rider allegedly stole some fuel and fled before officers arrived.

They say the driver re-entered Highway 404, heading southbound and then westbound to Highway 407, where he was observed weaving through traffic and reaching speeds “in excess” of 200 km/h.

Police say the motorcyclist eventually arrived at a business in Mississauga and fled the area in a ride-share vehicle, leaving behind the motorcycle with a counterfeit licence plate that read “Venom.”

Police say officers eventually caught up with the suspect in Richmond Hill and charged him with several offences including stunt driving and dangerous operation.
