WEYBURN – The family of a woman shot on a rural highway in Saskatchewan is appealing for her killer to come forward.

RCMP say 44-year-old Tanya Myers was shot Friday while riding in an SUV on Highway 39 near Weyburn, southeast of Regina.

At a virtual news conference, Supt. Joshua Graham read a statement from the woman’s family saying they’re shocked by her death.

The statement described her as an energy healer and animal lover who kept to herself so she could look after her nine cats.

“We are all in shock and disbelief, and the loss of Tanya leaves a giant, gaping hole in our lives and her cats’ lives, who are all wondering where their mom is gone,” the statement says.

“To the person or persons responsible, please grow a conscience and take responsibility for your actions. Tanya deserves justice and her family deserves answers.”

Mounties have said Myers was a passenger in the SUV when she was shot and called her death “suspicious in nature.”

Graham said Tuesday that an autopsy has confirmed Myers died of a gunshot wound. Police aren’t sure if the shooting was accidental or intended, he said, but officers are canvassing landowners in the area.

Police also said a second vehicle was travelling on the same road at the same time when its driver heard two pops that sounded like rocks hitting their windshield. They later reported having a flat tire.

Investigators examined the flat tire and determined it was flattened by a gunshot.

The driver told RCMP they may have been travelling behind a separate SUV that was shot at around the same time that day. Mounties have said the second driver did not know the people in the SUV and wasn’t aware of the shooting.

“It’s not necessarily random, and although we don’t necessarily think it’s targeted either, it could be accidental,” Graham said. “Based on the fact that now we’ve uncovered that there have been two vehicles shot in the same instance … this isn’t two separate incidents … it’s one incident.

He also said police have no reason to believe any more vehicles were hit.
