The province’s police watchdog says it’s investigating after a man was fatally shot by police in a northern Ontario community.

The Special Investigations Unit says Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call about a person in crisis at a property in the Ena Lake area, north of Kenora, on Monday evening.

The SIU says officers found a man who had an “edged weapon” and they tried to negotiate with him.

It says police used conducted energy weapons after an “interaction,” and multiple officers shot their firearms at the 39-year-old man.

The watchdog says paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Five investigators have been assigned to the case and the SIU is asking anyone with information to come forward.
