WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba Bisons football team handed the No. 4-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies their first loss of the 2011 Canada West season on Saturday at the U of M Stadium.
The Bisons, who held Saskatchewan scoreless in the fourth quarter, defeated the visiting Huskies 26-16 in the annual Homecoming Game which was the final one in that venue as the new football facility being built next door is expected to be open next season.
Bisons defensive back Grayson Wells scored the game-winning touchdown when he recovered a fumbled Saskatchewan punt return in the end zone just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.
With the win, Manitoba improved to a 2-1 record while Saskatchewan is also 2-1.
Manitoba quarterback Khaleal Williams completed 23 of 38 passes for 280 yards. Williams tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to slotback Tyson Takasaki which tied the score at 12-12 in the early third quarter. It was an 11-play, 90-yard drive.
Leading the Bisons receivers was Jared Ralko with 10 catches for 103 yards. On the ground Anthony Coombs ws the leading rusher with 10 carries for 68 yards while Kienan LaFrance had eight carries for 19 yards.
Saskatchewan passed for just 186 yards between quarterbacks Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren and Trent Peterson.
