Handing out hardware…

The University of Winnipeg and the U of Manitoba handed out year-end sports awards last week.

A pair of fifth-year seniors took top prize at the Wesmen banquet on Thursday night with women’s basketball point guard Antoinette Miller and men’s volleyball libero Logan Brennan being named female and male athletes of the year.

Hockey player Venla Hovi and basketball player Justus Alleyn were named Bison Sports athletes of the year.

And then on Saturday afternoon, hockey player Venla Hovi and basketball player Justus Alleyn were named Bison Sports athletes of the year.

Miller played two seasons with the Wesmen and was a first-team All-Canadian both years. The Phoenix native also became the first women in Canada West history to be named outstanding player of the year and defensive player of the year in back-to-back seasons.

Brennan, a native of Bragg Creek, Alta., was a second-team Canada West all-star and won the Dale Iwanoczko Award nationally for his academics and community service.

In her third season with the Bisons, Hovi helped her team to a national championship a month after winning a bronze medal with Team Finland at the Winter Olympics.

Alleyn finished his career with the Bisons as the team’s all-time points leader and was named the team MVP for a third consecutive season.

Other Wesmen winners were:

z Men’s basketball point guard D.J. Dixon and women’s soccer forward Shae-Lynn Dodds were named male and female rookies of the year;

Daniel Thiessen of men’s volleyball and Rylie Dickson of women’s volleyball were named the Bill Wedlake Award winners as most improved athletes.

Kudos to…

z The Manitoba junior badminton championships were held last weekend at the Winnipeg Winter Club. Winners in the singles events were: Tiffany Tantakoun (U19 girls); Kiren Milan Deraj (U19 boys); Mackenzie Ftoma (U17 girls); Avery Dick (U17 boys); Serenity Faith Poirier (U15 girls); Evan Chen (U15 boys). Winners in the doubles events were: Deraj and Tantakoun (U19 mixed); Easton George and Sasha Lynn St. Pierre (U17 mixed); Traytaen Halcrow and Poirier (U15 mixed); Jeannette Ding and Claire Meier (U19 girls); Ftoma and St. Pierre (U17 girls); Poirier and Ghajaayine Senthilkumaran (U15 girls); Deraj and Allan Liu (U19 boys); Dick and George (U15 boys); and Chen and Halcrow (U15 boys).

All the winners automatically qualify to represent Manitoba at the Western Canadian Team Championships to be held in Calgary April 20-22.

Stars of the week

z Four goals in three games last week earned Levi Cudmore of the Winnipeg Blues MJHL player of the week honours. The 20-year-old native of Park River, N.D. has seven goals in his team’s first eight games.
