Team Colin Kurz (Meghan Walter, Brendan Bilawka, Sara Oliver, Hailey Ryan and Hugh McFarlane) from the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club won the provincial mixed curling championship last weekend at East St. Paul Curling Club. The team will now represent Manitoba at next season’s national mixed championship — Nov. 5-10 at the Fort Rouge Curling Club.
The husband and wife Manitoba team of Rae and Tom Campbell, who won the recent 2018 Canadian stick curling championship. Rae Campbell made history as the first woman to earn a gold medal in the 14-year history of the event.

Goaltender Riley McVeigh of the Virden Oil Capitals has been named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s player of the week. The 19-year-old stopped 37 of 38 shots to help lead his team to a 2-1 win over the Steinbach Pistons in Game 1 of their best-of-seven MJHL final. Runners-up were Pistons goalie Matthew Thiessen and defenceman Justin Lee of the Oil Capitals.
Gabrielle Legaspi and Gurveer Sran of the Maples Marauders badminton team were named the Manitoba High School Athletics Association urban athletes of the week after placing first in coed doubles at the Maples Invitational tournament. The rural nod went to Ian Penner of the Steinbach Christian Flames basketball team after the 5-foot-9 point guard averaged 20 points, seven assists and five steals a game to help his team earn a spot at this year’s provincial “AA” basketball championships.

Billed as Winnipeg’s Greatest Soccer Tournament, the Mini World Cup Tournament is underway and runs until May 6 at Winnipeg Soccer Federation’s North Indoor on Leila Avenue and Ralph Cantafio’s Soccer Complex on Waverley Ave. “I am excited to have the Mini World Cup Tournament return after 7 years,” ex-Winnipeg Fury player Alex Bustos said in a press release. “Winnipeg now has world class facilities and we can look to provide a tournament that helps prepare our local players for their outdoor season after playing a smaller format game throughout the winter months.”
The 4th annual Mark Scheifele hockey camp that helps support KidSport will be held June 23-24 at the Bell MTS Iceplex. Open to boys and girls aged 5-12, the camp features both skater and goalie-specific training sessions. Manitoba Moose goaltender Michael Hutchinson will assist with the goalie training sessions. KidSport Winnipeg is the camp beneficiary and all proceeds will help pay the registration fees for kids who cannot participate in sport due to financial barriers.
