Victoria Day is a national holiday that is celebrated on the first Monday before May 24, which is the birthday of Queen Victoria (1819-1901).

Many businesses and government services change their hours over the May long weekend. Here’s a selection:

SHOPPING

Most shopping centres (Outlet Collection, Polo Park, Kildonan Place, St. Vital Centre) are open Monday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Grant Park is open noon to 5 p.m.

The Forks Market building is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the Johnston Terminal is open 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Select tenants may choose to open earlier or close later at their discretion. Please contact individual merchants for hours of operation.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

 

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (gates close at 4:30 p.m.).

The Manitoba Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Movie theatres are open.

 

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will be collected as normally scheduled on the Victoria Day holiday for those with Monday as their collection day.

The Brady Road landfill (commercial customers only) is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot (residential customers only) is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

 

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

All Leisure Centres are closed Monday. Regular hours of operation are in effect for Saturday and Sunday.

The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

All City of Winnipeg swimming pools will be closed Monday, except the Pan Am Pool, Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex and Margaret Grant Pool. Pan Am is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Margaret Grant is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Cindy Klassen is open 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Regular hours of operation are in effect for all pools Saturday and Sunday.

 

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

On Monday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Monday.

For detailed information on library hours, call 311 or visit the Winnipeg Public Library website.

 

CEMETERIES

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona Cemeteries will be open for visitation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. Cemetery offices will be closed.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Monday.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed.

There is no mail delivery Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
