Brandon police believe they have found the body of Vishay Patel, who was reported missing in the western Manitoba city last week.
This body was found near the Assiniboine River and the Highway 110 bridge, just east of the city.
Patel was reported missing Friday morning. The 20-year-old was seen on home video surveillance leaving his residence in a grey 2012 Honda Civic.
Police later recovered the vehicle at a local Home Depot parking lot Friday evening, but Patel was nowhere to be found.
An eyewitness told police that they may have seen Patel walking towards the Riverbank Discovery Centre grounds.
Early Saturday afternoon, Brandon police asked the public to avoid the riverbank area due to an ongoing search and rescue operation.
Members of the Brandon Regional Search and Rescue Association, the Office of the Fire Commissioner and Brandon Fire and Emergency Services were involved in the search, as Patel’s friends and family gathered by the riverbank building near the Assiniboine River.
Sunday evening, a member of Patel’s family located clothing near the Assiniboine River and the Highway 110 bridge, roughly seven kilometres east of the Riverbank Discovery Centre.
A search of the area by emergency services personnel resulted in the discovery of a man’s body.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be continuing the investigation, although there are no signs of foul play at this time.
A family friend told the Brandon Sun Patel had been attending Assiniboine Community College as an international student for the last couple of years. He is originally from the Gujarat state of India.
