Winnipeg South Centre The matchup: Conservative MP Joyce Bateman is seeking a second term, but this riding is a top Liberal target. Jim Carr, founding CEO of the Business Council of Manitoba, is trying to bring Winnipeg South Centre (once the strongest Liberal seat in Canada) back to the Grits. The NDP are in the game with Matt Henderson, a teacher at St. John's-Ravenscourt School. The Green party has Andrew Park on the ballot.

Winnipeg South Centre

The matchup: Conservative MP Joyce Bateman is seeking a second term, but this riding is a top Liberal target. Jim Carr, founding CEO of the Business Council of Manitoba, is trying to bring Winnipeg South Centre (once the strongest Liberal seat in Canada) back to the Grits. The NDP are in the game with Matt Henderson, a teacher at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. The Green party has Andrew Park on the ballot.

Race so far: Intense. Two local issues percolating: the Waverley Street underpass, which the Conservatives promised to fund just days before the writ was dropped, and the fate of the Kapyong Barracks.

Elmwood-Transcona

The matchup: Conservative MP Lawrence Toet grabbed the riding from the NDP in 2011, and Daniel Blaikie wants it back. Blaikie’s father, Bill, represented this riding for three decades. But Toet is a smart campaigner. Andrea Richardson-Lipon is carrying the Liberal banner here, and Kim Parke is on the ballot for the Greens.

Race so far: Active. The NDP is throwing a lot of energy and money at the race.

Saint Boniface- Saint Vital

The matchup: When incumbent Shelly Glover announced she wouldn’t be running again, the race was on. Former city councillor Dan Vandal is running for the Liberals against agri-businessman François Catellier. Catellier has inherited Glover’s riding association’s six-figure bank account, but he’s new to the game. The NDP shook things up last week with the entry of former provincial health minister Erin Selby. The Greens are going with musician Glenn Zaretski.

Race so far: Quiet until last week, when Selby’s arrival on the scene added intrigue.

Winnipeg South

The matchup: One of three open races in Manitoba without an incumbent, Conservative candidate Gordon Giesbrecht, better known as the cold-weather researcher Prof. Popsicle, is hoping to succeed Rod Bruinooge as area MP. Terry Duguid is taking a second crack at a riding the Grits are targeting hard (this is one of the wealthiest Liberal riding associations in Manitoba). The NDP have yet to name a candidate. The Green Party is running Adam Smith.

Race so far: Nothing flashy.

Kildonan-St. Paul

The matchup: This suburban riding is shaping up as a three-way race in the absence of an incumbent. Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers executive Jim Bell has taken the Tory mantle from retiring MP Joy Smith. The NDP, with Suzanne Hrynyk, and the Liberals, with former NDP provincial cabinet minister MaryAnn Mihychuk, are running hard in the riding. Steven Stairs will be on the ballot for the Greens.

Race so far: Bell’s campaign has been slow out of the gate. Hrynyk and Mihychuk have been going full out for months.
