Manitoba MP Bergen won’t seek re-election

Candice Bergen, the Manitoba MP who has served as interim leader of the federal Conservatives since February, won’t be seeking re-election.

Bergen, who has represented the Portage-Lisgar riding since 2008, made the announcement in a news release this morning.

Bergen said she will continue to serve as an MP until the next election.

The Conservatives will choose a permanent leader this weekend.

The Offspring to play downtown arena Nov. 18

Punk-rock mainstays the Offspring have set a new date, Nov. 18, for their Canada Life Centre concert with Simple Plan.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at livenation.com and ticketmaster.ca, although fan-club presales for both bands are scheduled for Sept. 7. Ticket prices haven’t been released.

The Offspring, which began in the Los Angeles area and rose to stardom during the punk-rock revival of the 1990s, planned to play the downtown arena in February, but they postponed their Canadian tour owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suspect arrested after West End slaying

Winnipeg Police Service homicide investigators have arrested a man accused in a slaying in the West End last week.

Son Minh Nguyen, 66, was found dead in a suite in a group transitional housing facility in the 600 block of Home Street on Sept. 1.

Investigators arrested Jay Peter Penner, 34, of Winnipeg, and charged him with manslaughter on Sept. 2. He’s been detained.

Police allege the suspect and Nguyen had gotten into an argument, which led to a serious assault.

16-year-old accused in Mapleglen Drive killing

Winnipeg police have arrested a 16-year-old accused in the city’s latest homicide.

Police were called to a home on the 200 block of Mapleglen Drive for a reported assault just after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Officers found a severely injured man, who they attempted to save with emergency medical care. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the victim as Dakota Beardy, 26, of Winnipeg. Beardy is the 37th homicide victim in Winnipeg this year.

Investigators allege the suspect and the accused were together at the house on Mapleglen Drive when an altercation ensued. The 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder and detained.

Man shot during Logan Avenue home invasion

Winnipeg police are searching for suspects after a man was shot during a home invasion on Logan Avenue near McPhillips Street early Monday morning.

Winnipeg Police Service officers, including the dog unit and heavily armed tactical police, raced to a home on the 1100 block of Logan Avenue for the reported shooting just after 2 a.m. Monday.

Officers found an injured man in his 20s and gave him medical care, including the use of a tourniquet. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition, where he was stabilized.

Major crimes investigators have not yet announced any arrests in the incident and ask anyone with information to contact the unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Disappearance of Nelson House man being investigated as a homicide

The disappearance of a Nelson House man who has been missing since October is now being investigated as a homicide.

Rico Cody Linklater, 22, was reported missing Oct. 23 of last year. Over a month later, his parents made a public plea for anyone with any information on his disappearance to step forward.

RCMP officers from search and rescue, underwater recovery and major crime teams, along with Nelson House officers, are in Nelson House this week to continue the investigation.Anyone with information on his disappearance should call Nelson House RCMP at 204-484-2837, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com.

Winnipeg seek identity of man found in medical distress

Winnipeg police are trying to identify a man found in medical distress in early August.

Emergency responders were called to a restaurant on the 1100 block of Main Street on Aug. 5, where the man was found in serious condition and taken to hospital.

Major crimes investigators have not been able to identify the man, though they say the incident is not considered criminal at this point. Police say the man appears to be in his late teens or early 20s with a thin build and short black hair, and that he may have been in contact with people in the city or communities nearby.

Police ask anyone who could help investigators identify the man to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219.
