HSC announces New Year’s baby

Health Sciences Centre welcomed its first baby of 2024 just minutes after midnight.

James Vaughn Ramsay was born at 12:16 a.m. weighing 8 lbs., 5 oz, HSC Winnipeg posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) Monday afternoon.

Parents Stephanie Kirkland and Matthew Ramsay are celebrating the birth privately, the post read.

Man dies after being shot by police

A man has died following an encounter with Winnipeg police.

On Dec. 31, 2023, at approximately 2:22 p.m., police were called to an apartment suite in the 100 block of University Crescent, where a man was reportedly behaving erratically and was possibly armed, and that other people were in the suite, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a press release.

Officers found an armed male, and during the encounter, an officer fired and hit the person. Officers provided emergency medical care and the person was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he died.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has taken over responsibility for investigating the incident.

Police ask for information in Flora Avenue killing

Homicide investigators are looking for information related to a Thursday night incident that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.

Winnipeg police say they went to the 200 block of Flora Avenue with reports of “suspicious circumstances.” Upon arrival, they found the body of Brooklyn Elijah Hiebert, according to a press release.

Details of the circumstances of Hiebert’s death remain unclear.

The homicide unit asking anyone with recent interactions with Hiebert, or security footage in the area, to call investigators at 204-986-6508 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
