New loading zones coming for taxis, ride-hailing vehicles

Ride-hailing vehicles and taxis will share new loading zones.

While the Winnipeg Parking Authority initially proposed to create the zones solely for ride-booking vehicles, such as Uber and Lyft, city council cast a final vote to let taxis use them as well.

The zones are meant to designate safe spaces for drivers and riders to meet up at three zones to be added near Canada Life Centre and Burton Cummings Theatre.

Taxis will be included in the city's loading zones initially intended for ride-booking operations.

Sewer rates approved

Water and sewer rates will rise again in each of the next two years.

On Thursday, city council approved hikes that will see the annual bill for a sample household of four increase by $44 in 2026 and another $68 the following year. That would raise the total bill from $1,580 this year to $1,692 in 2027.

The city says the additional revenue is needed to help pay for the $3.092-billion upgrade to the North End sewage treatment plant.
