Two Winkler men who were standing in a ditch Friday evening with a car that had slid off an icy highway were killed when a teenage driver lost control of her vehicle, also ending up in the ditch.

Pembina Valley RCMP said the 17-year-old female, who didn’t realize two trucks had stopped on Provincial Road 428 north of Winkler in the RM of Roland to help the driver of the stuck vehicle, hit one of the trucks careening off the highway, and collided with the car and the two men at about 7:30 p.m.

The 44-year-old owner of the car, and the 73-year-old driver of one of the trucks, died in the collision.

RCMP said the teen, and a 17-year-old female passenger in her vehicle, were taken to the Boundary Trails Health Centre as a precaution.

RCMP are still investigating.

Meanwhile, RCMP are investigating a fatal collision in the RM of Springfield Monday morning.

One person died after two vehicles collided near the intersection of Fermor Avenue and the Perimeter Highway at about 7:50 a.m.
