Obby Khan has traded the blue and gold of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the blue of a Progressive Conservative byelection candidate.

Khan, 41, won the nod over two other candidates to become the Tory standard bearer in a byelection in former Premier Brian Pallister’s old riding of Fort Whyte.

Final ballot results were not released. The other candidates were Melanie Maher, a longtime Tory who ran unsuccessfully twice for the federal Conservatives, and Navroop Warraich, an optometrist in the riding.

”My God, I thought playing football was hard,” said Khan on a livestream video, which ran on the party’s website, immediately after the results were announced. “This was a painful long, long journey and we’re just started.

“Now let’s get ready for the next round.”

Khan will be facing NDP candidate Trudy Schroeder, the former head of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and Liberal candidate Willard Reaves, himself a former Blue Bomber star and a sheriff’s officer.

In a statement, Premier Heather Stefanson called Khan “a fantastic candidate and a strong community leader.” Khan had been featured in some of Stefanson’s campaign ads when she ran for PC leader last year.

“As witnessed by our candidates here tonight, our party is strong, united, vibrant and ready for the byelection,” she said.

“I know he will be a great MLA and a strong voice in our PC Caucus.”

Khan thanked the 1,700 members of the Tory party in Fort Whyte, more than half who signed up in the past month.

“I am so honoured and so proud to be standing here as your nominee to take on the Liberals and the NDP and we are going to do that starting on Monday, but I’m going to enjoy tonight with my family and my son,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the future and once again I’m so honoured to be part of this Blue family, to be moving the PC party forward. It is one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you.”

The date of the by-election has not been announced yet, but it must be held by March 29.
