Hey there, time traveller!

Looking for the best-decorated homes in Winnipeg this holiday season is a snap.
Carol Cassell has created the Winnipeg Christmas Map, a Google map in which each pin designates a decked-out house or holiday attraction. Cassell also moderates a Facebook group with the same name where people are invited to post photos of their holiday decorations and discuss seasonal events in the city.
The 33-year-old took the map citywide for the first time last year after four years of focusing on Transcona, her neighbourhood. It was Cassell’s way of spreading joy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The map quickly took off in 2020, garnering nearly 500,000 views by Christmas Day. The Facebook group, meanwhile, grew by about 1,000 members every day for a month before Dec. 25.
“It was way more than I could ever imagine,” says Cassell, a stay-at-home mom. “It was definitely very much needed and wanted, and I was definitely excited to see people using it so much.”
Cassell relies on submissions to create the map. Anyone with a decorated home can let Cassell know about it by filling out a Google form sheet she created. People can also submit a photo of their home that will be added with the pin.
Cassell updates the map daily. She expects submissions to pick up once December arrives, at which point she’ll likely spend an hour each day adding pins.
“I will still add my own if I come across them,” she says. “It’s kind of like treasure-hunting (when I’m) out looking for decorated houses to add to the map.”
Cassell inherited her fondness for the holidays. Her father loved Christmas and named her Carol because he thought she was as pretty as a Christmas carol. As a child, Cassell looked forward to baking with her mother, listening to Christmas music and opening gifts.
When she met her husband Eric in 2011, the couple made it an annual tradition to spend an evening driving around Linden Woods, looking at Christmas lights.
The magic of Christmas “sort of faded away” for Cassell, she says, when her father died in January 2015. The last time Cassell saw him was two weeks earlier, on Christmas Day.
“For a few years, Christmas was really hard to handle,” she says.
Having a child of her own changed that.
“My daughter was born three years ago, and that really brought back the magic of Christmas for me,” Cassell says. “Now that she’s a little bit older, she can understand what’s going on and it’s all very exciting — the decorating and the lights and everything.”
In addition to the Christmas map, Cassell maintains a Halloween map, a garage sale map, a playground map and a thrift store map. She plans to create two more maps: one for indoor family activities around Winnipeg, and one for outdoor winter activities.
Anyone interested in adding their home to the 2021 Winnipeg Christmas Map can fill out the form here.
The map is available here and you can follow Cassell on Instagram and TikTok by searching “Mapping Winnipeg.”
“One of the best parts of making the maps is when people message me to say, ‘This has made a difference, this has brought me joy,’” Cassell says. “That has been wonderful.”
