Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 28/03/2022 (1466 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
When Dayna Olson was a little girl, she often spent Saturdays baking with her grandmother. Whipping up bread, buns and cookies together instilled a love for baking that continues to this day.
“It’s just something I enjoy,” she says. “I find it’s therapeutic.”
Olson enjoys doing all kinds of baking, but sweet treats have a soft spot in her heart.
“My favourite thing to do is to make cakes, and my favourite part is decorating. It allows me to be creative.”
Olson’s family members aren’t the only people who benefit from her skills in the kitchen. The 48-year-old Crescentwood resident shares her baking through her volunteer work with Cakes for Kids Winnipeg, an organization that provides homemade birthday cakes to children who would not otherwise receive one.
The organization takes birthday cake requests from a handful of community partners, including Child and Family Services. These requests include information about the child’s interests and any special dietary needs.
The request is then filled by one of Cakes for Kids’ 200 volunteer bakers.
Olson, a registered nurse, first got involved in 2019.
Her most recent cake went to a boy celebrating his first birthday. The round vanilla cake was inspired by the 2006 animated film Happy Feet, about a dance-loving penguin in Antarctica. The cake was decorated with two shades of blue icing and topped with three penguins made using fondant.
“I enjoy volunteering because I like that the cake goes to someone who is less fortunate,” Olson says. “I hope it makes that child feel important on their birthday.”
Volunteers have baked and delivered more than 700 cakes since Christy Rogowski and Wendy Singleton founded Cakes for Kids in August 2014.
“We started Cakes for Kids with the understanding that Winnipeggers are known for (their) generosity,” Rogowski says. “We were so pleasantly surprised with the number of bakers that stepped forward to share their time and sprinkles.”
Debbie Smith, co-ordinator of volunteer connections at Winnipeg Child and Family Services, has seen first-hand the positive impact Rogowski, Singleton and their volunteers have had on the community.
Cakes for Kids has provided more than 230 cakes for CFS clients over the years.
“Cakes for Kids allows us to be a part of something awesome for a family, to give them hope and to share in celebrating their children’s birthdays,” Smith says. “These feel-good feelings are long-lasting with staff and families.”
As Easter approaches, Cakes for Kids is holding its annual Bunnies for Birthdays fundraiser until April 4.
The organization is selling 90-gram, 12.5-centimetre-tall solid milk chocolate bunnies (made by Mordens’ of Winnipeg) for $6 each or three for $15. Bunnies for Birthdays raises funds to supply bakers with cake boards and boxes, cupcake inserts and birthday cards. (Email cakesforkidswinnipeg@gmail.com for details.)
After shutting down temporarily at different points throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogowski is pleased Cakes for Kids has restarted.
“A birthday cake is a simple gesture but it can mean so much.”
