Bombers fall to Alouettes 27-12 in season-opener

Owing to sloppy play and lack of execution from all three phases of the game, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers opened their 2024 CFL season with a disappointing 27-12 loss to the Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium Thursday night.

The Bombers struggled to move the ball, generating just 284 yards on offence and one touchdown, which came on a short run from Johnny Augustine in the dying seconds, the game already out of reach. The rest of their points came off a 17-yard field goal from Sergio Castillo, a safety and a single-point rouge. Both the safety and rouge came after missed field goals from Castillo, who also missed the one-point convert on Winnipeg’s late TD.

Meanwhile, the Alouettes, who downed the Bombers in the Grey Cup last November, got a pair of receiving touchdowns from Tyson Philpot and a rushing score from Caleb Evans. David Cote was a perfect two-for-two on field goals to round out the scoring for the visitors.

The Bombers drop to 0-1, while the Alouettes improve to 1-0. Winnipeg will return to practice Sunday, to get ready for their Week 2 road matchup against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Bombers trail Alouettes 18-5 through three quarters

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head into the fourth quarter trailing the Montreal Alouettes, 18-5, in the regular-season opener at Princess Auto Stadium.

The Bombers took an early 3-0 lead with a 17-yard field goal from Sergio Castillo midway through the opening frame. The Alouettes answered back with a touchdown minutes later, with Cody Fajardo connecting with Tyson Philpot for the 14-yard score and a 7-3 edge through 15 minutes. The TD was aided by a fumbled punt by Myron Moore.

The Alouettes found the end zone again minutes into the second quarter. Facing a third-and-goal from the one-yard line, Montreal called in backup pivot Caleb Evans to punch in the QB sneak. The Bombers added a safety in the final seconds to cut the visitor’s lead to 14-5.

Montreal added to their lead in the third frame, with a 19-yard field goal and a single point off a rouge putting the visitors up 18-5.

Turtle rescued from Young Street blaze

No one was injured and a family pet, a turtle, was rescued after a single-family home on Young Street caught fire Thursday.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in the one-and-a-half storey home in the 500 block of Young Street around 5:15 p.m.

Crews encountered heavy smoke as they fought the flames from inside the home.

It was under control as of 5:38 p.m.

The fire is under investigation. The damage estimate wasn’t available.

The Bombers opened the scoring with a 17-yard field goal midway through the frame. The Alouettes answered back minutes later, with quarterback Cody Fajardo connecting with Tyson Philpot in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown and a 7-3 lead. The play was aided by a fumble on a punt return from Myron Mitchell.

Second cyclist struck by vehicle

A second cyclist was hit by a car on a busy Winnipeg street Thursday.

Winnipeg police say the accident happened just before 4 p.m. on the corner of Broadway and Furby Street.

The victim was rushed to hospital in unstable condition.

A crumpled bike and a piece of clothing was seen laying on the road near the intersection’s crosswalk, while a car sat parked facing westbound a few feet away.

Police didn’t have any other details about the afternoon crash, citing the ongoing investigation. No arrests had been made at the time.

Just after 7 a.m. Thursday morning a 61-year-old cyclist was hit on Wellington Crescent near Cockburn Street North. He later died of his injuries.

Two teens arrested, two men wanted in Fisher River slaying

Two teens have been arrested and two men are at large after a man was found slain in Fisher River Cree Nation Wednesday.

Manitoba RCMP say they are looking for Perry Durocher, 19, and Jerome Moore, 23, who have been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 51-year-old man in the community.

Two teen girls, a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old, were arrested Wednesday and also face manslaughter charges in connection with the death. They remain in custody.

Durocher is believed to be in Winnipeg and Moore is believed to be in Norway House.

Fisher Branch RCMP were contacted about a missing man from the First Nation on Saturday. Police, including a canine unit, went to the Interlake to help search for the man on Sunday morning.

The body of a 51-year-old Fisher River man was found in the Rural Municipality of Fisher that afternoon.

Cyclist hit by driver on Wellington Crescent dies in hit-and-run

The man who was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike on Wellington Crescent Thursday morning has died.

The 61-year-old victim had been travelling eastbound down Wellington Crescent near Cockburn Street North and was struck by a driver going in the same direction. He was sent to hospital in critical condition and has died.

Police said the collision was a hit-and-run and that officers have found a suspect vehicle but did not say whether they have a suspect. The area remains blocked off to traffic.

Cyclist hit by vehicle, Wellington Crescent closed between Dorchester and Hugo

A cyclist was sent to hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle on Thursday morning.

The collision happened shortly after 7 a.m.

Wellington Crescent remains closed in both directions between Dorchester Avenue and Hugo Street.

The Winnipeg Police Service could not provide details on the victim or whether the driver stayed on the scene Thursday morning, but said they expected to send a news release on the incident Thursday or Friday.

Man dies after assault; murder charge laid

A suspect is charged with second-degree murder after a man assaulted last month died in hospital.

Richard Lauren Fehr, 56, was assaulted on the 400 block of River Avenue on the night of May 25.

Fehr, who was unconscious when police arrived at the scene, was placed on life support in hospital and died Wednesday, police said Thursday.

The suspect fled before officers arrived. Investigators later arrested Dorion Anthony Terrence Olson, 25.

Voting underway in Louis Riel school trustee byelection

Voting has begun in the byelection to fill a vacant trustee position in the Louis Riel School Division.

Polls opened at 8 a.m. for the Ward 1 vote and close at 8 p.m.

Voters are encouraged to take their voter’s notice with them. Eligible voters who did not receive a notice can determine their designated voting location here.

The candidates are Marcel Boille, Jacqueline Cassel-Cramer, Bob Lawrie, Sandra Saint-Cyr and Ian Walker.

The seat was declared vacant in late November, after Francine Champagne resigned.

Murder charges laid in Minegoziibe Anishinabe double slaying

A 19-year-old man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder after a double homicide in Minegoziibe Anishinabe, RCMP said Thursday.

Oryan Flamand, a resident of the First Nation, which is formerly known as Pine Creek, remains in custody.

Winnipegosis RCMP were sent to a report of shots fired on West Road at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers found an injured 34-year-old man, who died at the scene. The body of a 52-year-old woman was found in the same area five hours later.

A standoff with a suspect began at about 5:25 a.m. Shots were fired from the home he was in, but no RCMP officers were injured, police said earlier this week.

The suspect tried to flee in an off-road vehicle but was arrested, police said previously.

Minegoziibe Anishinabe is a roughly 110-kilometre drive north of Dauphin.

Woman charged in William Avenue gun incident

City police blocked off part of William Avenue on Wednesday night after they were told a person was waving a gun around inside a suite.

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service, including members of the heavily armed tactical support team, were sent to the building on the 500 block of William at about 7:30 p.m.

Pedestrian and vehicle traffic was cordoned off in the immediate area.

Two people were inside the suite. A male was released without being charged, while a 33-year-old woman has been charged with four firearms charges.

A loaded shotgun and ammunition were recovered.

Pair face charges after home cannabis shop busted

Two people are facing charges after RCMP busted an illegal cannabis store being operated out of a Flin Flon home.

Police seized more than $430,000 in product from the Princess Boulevard home on April 30. The product included a large quantity of dried cannabis, thousands of individually packaged cannabis gummies, hundreds of cannabis-infused chocolate bars, hundreds of vials of cannabis derivatives, multiple pounds of psilocybin, 25 guns and more than $90,000 in cash.

None of the cannabis had the proper Manitoba taxation stamps, RCMP said Thursday.

A 42-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested and later released from custody. RCMP said they face charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, multiple firearms offences and offences under the Cannabis Act.
