South Indian Lake RCMP investigating machete attack

2:16 PM

Mounties have arrested a man following a machete attack that left a 19-year-old injured early Saturday morning.

RCMP say they responded to a call around 5:05 a.m. on Saturday in South Indian Lake, about 790 kilometres north of Winnipeg. While en route, officers spotted the suspect walking along the road. He fled after being told he was under arrest, but was caught after a short foot chase.

The victim, a male, was found at a nearby residence and taken to the local nursing station. He was later airlifted to Winnipeg for further treatment.

The 21-year-old is charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking. He remains in custody.

The investigation is ongoing.

Mountie cleared in shooting of pedestrian ‘acting erratically’ on Trans-Canada Highway

1:10 PM

A Mountie who shot a woman accused of carrying a weapon, wandering through traffic and climbing onto vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway will not face charges.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has concluded its investigation into the May 12 incident and cleared the involved officer, it said in a news release Monday.

A 54-year-old woman from the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford was injured in the shooting. Police were sent to an area near Road 88 West, about nine kilometres west of Carberry, after receiving reports of “a person acting erratically and walking in traffic,” the release said.

“The woman was non-compliant and produced an edged weapon. An officer discharged their firearm, striking the woman,” the IIU said. “Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director will not be authorizing charges.”

Seven civilian witnesses and the woman who was shot by police provided statements to investigators, the release said.

The IIU did not release a copy of its investigative report because the woman is awaiting court proceedings related to charges stemming from the incident. The report will be made available after those proceedings conclude, it said.

Highway crash west of Brandon kills one senior, critically injures another

11:24 AM

One Brandon senior has died and another was critically injured after a highway collision in the Rural Municipality of Whitehead on Saturday night.

Mounties responded to the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 1 and Provincial Road 250, about 25 kilometres west of Brandon, around 8:50 p.m. and found a truck and SUV resting in the centre median. Both vehicles were heavily damaged, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday.

Investigators determined the two people were travelling in the SUV, which was headed southbound on PR 250 when it entered the intersection. The truck, travelling westbound on Highway 1, collided with the vehicle’s driver’s side, RCMP said.

Emergency services transported the 77-year-old woman driving the SUV, and a 78-year-old male passenger, to the hospital with critical injuries. The woman later died, while the man remains in hospital. Both were from Brandon, police said.

The 23-year-old female driver of the truck and her 20-year-old female passenger, both from Brandon, were not physically injured.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

Brandon RCMP, along with an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, continue to investigate.

One taken to hospital after Perimeter Highway crash

9:10 AM

One person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a multi-vehicle collision on the north Perimeter Highway on Monday.

Police were sent to the Perimeter Highway just west of Highway 8 at about 7:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving multiple semi-trucks and other vehicles, Manitoba RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Melanie Roussel said in an emailed statement.

The westbound lanes on the Perimeter were closed between Highway 8 and Pipeline Road after the crash.

The collision snarled traffic, with vehicles lined in the westbound lanes before the Highway 8 underpass. A large truck with a crumpled front end was flanked by a pickup truck and an SUV with similar damage.

Mixed-use property burns on Watt Street

8:42 AM

A mixed-use commercial and residential property in the Chalmers neighbourhood burned early Monday, forcing residents to evacuate.

Fire crews responded to the building, located on the 200 block of Watt Street, around 2:18 a.m. to find smoke and flames coming from within, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

The occupants of the building self-evacuated, and firefighters launched an interior fire attack. Paramedics assessed two residents at the scene, but they did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported, the release said.

WFPS declared the fire under control at 3:03 a.m., it said.

The City of Winnipeg deployed its emergency social services team to provide temporary support for displaced residents. The fire is under investigation and damage estimates are not available, WFPS said.
