Bombers lose in Edmonton

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fell 25-20 to the Edmonton Elks Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium.

With the loss, the Bombers drop to 8-8. The win keeps the Elks alive in the West Division playoff race and improves their record to 7-9.

The Bombers return to action on Friday when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Riders (12-4) clinched the top spot in the West on Friday at home with a 27-19 win over the Toronto Argonauts.

Man charged after August parking lot assault

Following in incident in August in which man was struck down by a vehicle, Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect.

On Aug. 3 just before 3 a.m., officers attended to the parking lot of a hotel in the 1000 block of McPhillips Street to check the well-being of a man who had been struck by a vehicle.

Police located a man in his 40s who was injured and required medical attention. He was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Initial investigation showed the victim and another man, not known to him, got into an argument in the parking lot. As the victim walked away, he was struck down by a vehicle. The victim was hit a second time before the suspect drove off.

The major crimes unit continued to investigate and identified a suspect. On Oct. 9, a 51-year-old man was arrested. He faces charges including assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm and uttering threats.

He was released on an appearance notice.

Two injured in reported armed robbery

Winnipeg police are investigating after two men were injured in a home on Thursday evening.

On Oct. 9 around 6:30 p.m., general patrol officers and the Tactical Support Team responded to a residence in the 0-99 block of Bachman Bay after the report of a robbery involving a firearm.

Two men were located with shooting-related injuries and transported to hospital in stable condition.

The circumstances regarding this incident are still under investigation by the major crimes unit. No arrests have been made at this time.

Woman charged after cadets assaulted in Central Park

12:28 PM

On Oct. 10 around 11 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service’s Auxilliary Force Cadet Unit responded to Central Park for a report of an intoxicated person lying on the children’s play structure.

Upon arrival, cadets located an intoxicated woman and detained her under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. While attempting to place her in their vehicle for transport, the cadets were spat on and kicked.

General patrol officers were summoned and they arrested the woman. The cadets were not injured.

A 23-year-old woman is facing charges of assaulting a peace officer. Once sober, she was released on an undertaking.

Man arrested in Spence neighbourhood after shotgun found

A man faces multiple firearm-related charges after police arrested him Friday morning,

On Oct. 10 around 9:15 a.m. police officers were patrolling the Spence neighbourhood when they observed a man enter and exit an apartment in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street.

As the man exited the building, police said, he quickly tossed a larger item behind him and tried to evade the officers. They believed the item was a firearm and took the man into custody

A sawed-off shotgun was recovered, along with ammunition and 2 grams of fentanyl (estimated street value of $300) located on the suspect.

A 23-year-old man faces firearm- and drug-related charges, as well as tickets under the Trespass Act and Highway Traffic Act. He was detained in custody.

Two arrested, charged in string of thefts

12:16 PM

On Friday, the Winnipeg Police Service helicopter, AIR1, assisted in the apprehension of two suspects seen fleeing the scene of a commercial break-in on Henderson Highway.

The suspects were linked to several other recent commercial break-and-enters.

On Oct. 10 around 1:15 a.m., two suspects broke into a gas bar in the 1100 block of McLeod Avenue, stealing cash and cigarettes.

Shortly after, around 2 a.m., suspects broke into a commercial unit in the 200 block of Henderson Highway. Once inside, according to police, they broke through to an adjoining business and stole packages and electronics.

Police were alerted to the break-in on Henderson, and officers from East District, the K9 Unit and AIR1 responded. AIR1 spotted two suspects fleeing and coordinated ground units in the area.

A male suspect was taken into custody on Hart Avenue, and a female suspect on Noble Street. They were turned over to the major crimes unit.

The two are also being investigated in connection with break-ins and robberies including one on Sept. 12 in the 1300 block of McPhillips Street and on Sept. 14 and Oct. 6 in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue.

The man, 46, was charged with various counts of break and enter and theft and was detained in custody. The woman, 42, was also charged with various counts of break and enter and theft and was released on an undertaking.

Suspects sought after man stabbed outside costume social

11:58 AM

A man was stabbed during an early-morning fight with some other men outside the venue of a costume social on Overton Street.

On Oct. 11 around 1 a.m., Winnipeg police officers responded to the St. Vital community centre. The victim, a man in his 30s, was transported to hospital in unstable condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition.

The suspects fled prior to the officers’ arrival.

The major crimes unit continues to investigate.
